This course is an introduction is designed to give students a basic understanding of music therapy, the history of music therapy, education and training requirements of music therapists, and music therapy methods with various clinical populations. This course will also introduce students to the music therapy assessment, treatment, and evaluation process including writing appropriate goals and objectives. Finally, a brief overview of approaches to research and corresponding resources will be provided.
MUTY M101 Physical Disabilities 2 crs.
This course is an overview of music therapy theory, research, and clinical practice with children and adults with various medical conditions. This course will have a strong experimental component, where students will role-play client and therapist in an effort to practice concepts and techniques learn in class.
MUTY M117, M217, M317,M417 Music Therapy Field Work Seminar 1 cr.
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to observe, participate in, co-lead, or lead music therapy sessions. This course is further designed to give students the opportunity to develop skills within the music therapy treatment process including assessment, treatment implementation, evaluation, and documentation, as directed by the on-site supervisor. Lastly, this course will provide students with the opportunity to learn and develop ethical thinking skills.
MUTY M200 Mental Retardation and Exceptionality 2 crs.
This course is an overview of music therapy theory, research, and clinical practice in work with developmental disabilities and autism including an introduction to behavioral therapy and the law and the exceptional child. This course will have a strong experimental component, where students will role-play client and therapist in an effort to practice concepts and techniques learn in class.
MUTY M201 Childhood Disorders 2 crs.
This course is an overview of music therapy theory, research, and clinical practice in work with mental health disorders first diagnosed in childhood and adolescents. This course will have a strong experimental component, where students will role-play client and therapist in an effort to practice concepts and techniques learn in class.
MUTY M300 Gerontology 2 crs.
This course is an overview of music therapy theory, research, and clinical practice in work with older adults and with hospice. In addition to the review of the literature, this course will have a strong experimental component. Students will be required to role-play client and therapist in an effort to practice concepts and techniques learned in class.
MUTY M301 Adult Disorders 2 crs.
This course is an overview of music therapy theory, research, and clinical practice in work with psychiatric disorders including substance abuse. This course will have a strong experimental component, where students will role play client and therapist in an effort to practice concepts and techniques learn in class.
MUTY M400 Improvisation and Physiological Responses to Music 2 crs.
This course is an in-depth exploration of clinical improvisation and receptive methods within the field of music therapy and physiological responses to music. This course has a strong experiential component whereby role-playing of client/therapist relationships will be undertaken. Lastly, students will explore and begin the internship application process.
MUTY M401 Affective and Perceptual Responses to Music 2 crs.
This course is an in-depth examination of the affective and perceptual responses to music and corresponding treatment approaches in music therapy. Additionally, this course covers professional issues within the field of music therapy including clinical effectiveness and advocacy.
MUTY M497 Music Therapy Internship 1 — 7 crs.
Internship requires a minimum of 900 clock hours of uninterrupted service at an AMTA approved clinical setting, commencing at the completion of other coursework.
